Who would have guessed that this day that began with a windy morning and a little gray would turn out to be one of the best in my life! Our trip started well. We departed from The Marino Ballena Park …

Who would have guessed that this day that began with a windy morning and a little gray would turn out to be one of the best in my life!

Our trip started well. We departed from The Marino Ballena Park and took a large, comfortable boat with a friendly captain and crew which had many years of experience. Just before starting our adventure, one of our passengers told us two horror stories about the ocean which according to his words supposed to be extremely dangerous and never brought him any good when being on a boat. Ufff…! I breathed deeply, knowing it was now or never. There wouldn’t probably another chance to do this tour. I prayed to God everything would be fine!

Our journey was amazing; we saw dolphins, frigate birds, whichare known as Pacific pirates because they like to steal food and nests of others, we passed through places with the most fascinating views such as Isla de la Ballena, Las Tres Hermanas and Isla Violines. Finally when we spotted our destination, I remembered the sailor Rodrigo de Triana, screaming land in sight! Just like when America was discovered by Columbus and this time, when I discovered the Caño Island for the first time.

Caño Island looks very special with its views and white, sandy beaches, but the best part, I thought was the experience which I found below the surface, inthe crystal clear, turquoise water. It was incredible.

Well I have to admit, first I panicked. Yes..! I could not breathe through the snorkel, swallowed water, I wanted to breathe through my nose and of course I could not breathe this way, so I felt like my heart would explode, then when I almost surrendered, our guide came to help and instructed me to calm down, and take deep, slow breaths through my mouth. For the first time in my life I felt like a real explorer. I relaxed and let my body float on the water. The fear was gone, and it felt like I was being embraced by the warm water. I looked down and it was literally love at first sight. I could barely see the water anymore; I just went into another world and I was so fascinated by its hidden beauty!

We had the opportunity to do snorkeling on a rock formation of volcanic origin, where I saw colonies of coral, different schools of minnows and some lonely reefs, so pure and with bright colors that it seemed to have been drawn. Among them: Royal Angelfish, Moorish Idol, Pargo crumbs, scissor-tailed Damsels, parrotfish, butterfly fish and many more were making their way through their world. Now I know from personal experience, and not because I have read or heard it of anyone else, why it is said that this island is an ideal location for incredible diving and snorkeling.

After this wonderful experience, it was time for lunch. I ate so much that I had the feeling I could explode. After the first session and being energized once more it became more than just snorkeling because it was fun. It became a necessity to see more of this intrigues world below the surface!

After a rest and a pleasant conversation with my fellow-passengers we prepared to return back to Dominical. On the way back we were fortunate to see two types of whales: The Pilot and Bryde. Another gift of nature.

Finally we touched ground again. I knew for sure that our traveling companion who assured us the sea gives him nothing good, would never say that again. For this day the South Pacific waters gave us nothing more than beautiful surprises.

Enjoy the Costa Rican food, dance the night away and make exciting expeditions during the night…

When you stay in Villas Rio Mar and you wonder what you can do in the area during the night, you can be sure that there are plenty of options for young and old!

In the village there are some great places to enjoy a party, dance the night away, enjoy nature or dine in a typical Costa Rican restaurant or world restaurant.. (however it changes per season if the places are crowded. Usually during June until August and December until February are the busy periods, the others are mainly calm).

The following overview will show you the most interesting possibilities:

Top restaurants:

*El Rancho is the restaurant of Villas Rio Mar, serving high quality food and offering excellent service. The restaurant is built in typical Palenque style, serving international food and other great cuisine together with delicious cocktails made from exotic fruits.

*Sushi bar restaurant is a great restaurant, serving all kinds of delicious sushi and salads! It has a small sushi bar and this is one of the favorite restaurants for many tourists and locals in Dominical. This restaurant is located next to Que nivel and offers the freshest products you can get.

*Coconut spice: If you like to try some other world food, you can go to this excellent, cozy, Thai restaurant.

*Tortilla Flats For typical Costa Rican, fast serving food, at a low cost with sea view, this is the perfect place! This is a typical hang out place for local surfers too. No wonder that the atmosphere is so relaxing!

Bars/ dancing:

*On Tuesdays Que Nivel is the place to be. This bar is the perfect place to get to know new people (tourists and locals) by playing cards/ board games and playing pool or have some nice cocktails at the bar and relax in the hammock.

*Then there is Maracatu, a typical restaurant/ bar/ dance area which has ladies night on Wednesdays. During the evening the typical food and the vegetarian food they serve is delicious and in the evening all Ticos, surfers and tourists join to dance on reggae and world-music.

*San Clemente is a small discotheque in Dominical. This happy place is specially known by tourists. People go here especially on Fridays.

*Finally at the end of the week you should definitely go to Roca Verde. This is the biggest discotheque in the area and situated in the north of Dominical, next to the beach. The building is open so you can enjoy the sea while dancing the night away on Hip-hop and other popular music.

Tours during the night:

*The frog tour is the newest tour Villas Rio Mar offers. From 15.00 to 18.30 you will go hiking in the unspoiled rainforest, see an amazing waterfall, have a nice dinner with spectacular few over the rainforests and the sea and you will be guaranteed to see the 3 most famous frogs by day and night: the bluejeans frog, the redeyed frog and the black and green frog and when lucky way more animals hiding in the rain forest!

*Night safaris. Aren’t you scared of the dark? And ever wanting to experience the jungle, which is even more exiting by night? Here is your chance! There are two possibilities when you would like to go on an exciting jungle walk. The first option is to see the mangrove swamps in Tereba Sierpe, the largetst area of mangrove swamps in Central America where you will be able to see crocodiles, snakes, frogs, sloths, raccoons and opossums. The second option is a thrilling walk into the nearby rainforest of Hacienda Barú. You will be able to live and sleep in a tented camp right next to the jungle. Big chance you will spot all sorts of creatures and experience something you will never forget!

The night before the trip I could hardly sleep because I was very anxious for the adventure that was awaiting us. I went with four nice Dutch guests of the hotel.

At 6 a.m. our transport arrived with our guide who would accompany us to our Corcovado adventure. We departed early in the morning, taking the Costanera highway, along the Pacific Ocean, to Sierpe.

I must say we felt very comfortable with him and I think I can speak for the rest of the group this day as well when saying: we appreciated his great enthusiasm and desire to teach the principals of each place we passed! It was evident from the confidence with which he spoke that he knew a lot and he was very proud of all the flora and fauna within the area.

After passing several beaches such as Dominicalito, Ventanas, Uvita, La Colonia, Ballena, Arcos, Piñuelas and Tortuga we had a nice breakfast and then continued our journey.

Once in Sierpe, the place we took the boat, the people who worked on the boats were preparing everything for the trip and we walked to the pier to get introduced to our captain for the day: a young, nice looking, Tico guy.I think everyone in the beginning felt a bit nervous about how young he actually looked, but more about this later on!).

We got on the boat and went into the wonderful Terra-Sierpe Mangrove, calm waters and for the first time in my life I saw the incredible drooping branches of the mangrove swamps on the ground taking root and creating impressive barriers and homes for a plethora of different kinds of fish, shellfish and amphibians.

This morning our Captain had a race against time because of the higher getting tide. We had to reach the mouth of the Sierpe River (point where the river and sea come together) before the tide was at its highest point and so we went fast, but also several quick times to check out the biodiversity just minutes before the water got too high. He asked us to keep our cameras with us and prepare for the moment for what would be my first Oh My God!

We forgot about all our doubts about the captain’s appearance; already after a few minutes he passed out test: he looked like a captain who knew what he was doing: he was calm and safe, on top of his game and flaunting with his skills and knowledge on our way to the mouth of the river. Immediately when we crossed the mouth there was a cry of joy and triumph followed by hugs and kisses and congratulations for the captain. From that moment on no one was scared anymore, on the contrary, I dare to say that we were looking forward to the return to the hotel already!

Just few minutes after we arrived at San Pedrillo, we already got a warm welcome from many Red Parrots with their stunning colors. The Corcovado Experience was wonderful, it is very difficult to describe it in words, you just have to see it for yourself, walk in and enjoy the great variety of birds that live there. A preview of a few of the animals we saw: the Kettle Crest, toucans, hummingbirds, an impressive White Falcon, the bow tie and Trogon, plus raccoons and the green and black frog. After we walked happily around amazed by all the beauty the moment arrived for what would be my second Oh My God!: when we ran into some delicate spider monkeys to urinate and PUPE …on me.

Apart from my encounter with the monkeys, which were actually very beautiful, I must say, it was amazing being in the middle of the jungle and hearing the sounds of woodpeckers pecking at tree trunks and all the other noises of the wild life surrounding us. I think there are just too many animals and beautiful nature which you cannot experience anywhere else in Costa Rica. We should not miss out on this opportunity to visit the Corcovado National Park and enjoy Costa Rica’s nature at its very best.
