Caño Island is an amazing Biological Reserve in Costa Rica. Located in the Pacific Ocean, about 20 Km Offshore of the Osa Peninsula. This place is also considered the best snorkeling and diving area of the country, especially because of the visibility of about 20 meters deep (65 feet). In the crystal clear waters lives a great variety of different species such as: turtles, whales and reef sharks. Also, a quiet path on the island will lead you on a beautiful walk exploring the island. Caño Island is also known for being an ancient indigenous cemetery.
We depart early in the morning between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. The meeting point and departure point is the Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita. From Dominical it takes about 20 minutes (18km) to get there by car. (Transport is not included). Then you will take a comfortable boat ride to Caño Island. We will enter the Pacific Ocean, passing very close to places with a fascinating view such as: Isla Ballena, Las tres hermanas, Isla Violines, Bahía Drake y La Reserva de Marenco. The boat ride will take about an hour and a half to reach Caño Island.
During the boat tour we will have the opportunity to watch some birds (pelicans, frigates of the South, gulls etc…) also depending of the season we hope to have the opportunity to observe whales: Humpbacks, the killer, Pilot whales and of course turtles and dolphins.
Once on the island, the guide will explain the itinerary and give some instructions for an even more enjoyable and safe snorkeling experience, this session will last one hour.
Access to land part of the island, is lately being highly regulated. The island doesn't offer bathrooms or picnic areas at this moment; Authorities have reported recently that not allowed eating on the island, which is why the tour operators serve the food in the boat. So, you will do the first session (snorkel), a lunch will be served (between the two sessions), then you will land on the island for a break, you can relax, take a nap in the shade, next you will do the second session (snorkel).
Finally, we’ll start heading back to Uvita…
Return time: between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 pm
Costs of the tour: $130.00 per person.
